FEBRUARY 2023 NEWSLETTER

President Minute

Welcome back from the Christmas break and holiday season.

A number of events have occurred and are coming up in the early part of the 2023.

Firstly,  we are obviously running the trial regarding meetings to try and increase
membership participation where we can and to also provide some relief to the onerus
commitment of weekly meetings. As has been widely broadcast for the first three months of
2023 there is two meetings per month. Therefore the second Monday of the month is a
lunchtime meeting at the South of Perth Yacht Club and the fourth Monday of the month is
an evening meeting at the Dome Restaurant, 100 The Esplanade, Mt Pleasant.
This is a three month trial so in April we will revert to the weekly lunch meeting
until a decision is made regarding the preferred meeting model for Melville Rotary.

So plenty happening in the Rotary Club of Melville !

All committees have been very active and busy. The Vocational Committee recently
arranged a social event at the “Glowing Rooms” which was a 3D golfing experience that was
challenging for a few and with some exceptional skills displayed by PP John MacKay who
won the prize for lowest score. What a shame he did not get as many hits as others - some
of whom got exceptional value for money!

The International Committee are really active and are organising not one but two visitations
to the orphanages at Thailand’s Borderless Friends. The first is being arranged by Leigh Smith
in early March and the second by Murray Meaton in July.

I know there is also a number of Rotarians and partners attending both the upcoming Rotary
conventions in both Mandurah ( Feb 17 & 18,2023 ) and then later in the year at Melbourne
for the International Convention.

RIP GORDON CARGEEG OBE
It would be remiss of me to acknowledge the passing of our Melville Rotary stalwart and
honoury member Gordon Cargeeg OBE, who passed away on 7th January, 2023. There were
many Rotarians and partners who attended the service for Gordon and I was honoured to be
able to present his involvement in Scouting, Rotary and life in general to all the attendees.
Knowing of Gordon’s Rotary and life history has made me respect him even more. I thank
Rotary for the connection to have allowed me to know this gentleman.

The Rotary Clubs of Melville and Applecross meet on
February, 2023 at 6.30pm at The Pavilion Bar, Mount Pleasant to acknowledge Paul Harris and the first meeting of Rotary. On that occasion they met for fellowship and not to raise any funds. Most Rotarians wore their Rotary T Shirt to create an
awareness of Rotary in the community. Paul Harris fellows, were also invited along!
Pictured: just a few of the happy attendees from Melville and Applecross Rotary Clubs. Approx. 30 people at The Rowing Pavilion,The Esplanade,Mount Pleasant .

Congratulations to PP Graham Wheelers’ granddaughter Leilani
who has secured a  scholarship through The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade ( DFAT) which she will be
undertaking in South Korea. Leilani is well known to us for the assistance she has provided to our club over a number of years as she has progressed through life and grown into a lovely young lady.
