President Ponderings
Well most projects have been achieved with a few still in the pipeline awaiting completion for the Rotary year.
Towards the end of May there will be the Queen’s Jubilee tree planting program. Ian Williams will be seeking Rotarians to assist with this program and I understand it won’t be hard work as holes apparently will be pre-dug so we just have to pop the tree in. This has been a fabulous project so please assist Ian where you can when he calls for assistance.
So far there will have been two visitations with a third one soon to the Borderless Friendship villages in Thailand in this Rotary year. This has resulted in a significant number of the children now sponsored by our club members and friends of club members. Well done to the International Committee on keeping this project in the forefront for our club.
Club meetings have now been determined to be two per month with all meetings at South of Perth Yacht Club. Please note that the meetings will be on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month. Lunchtime meetings will be on the 2nd Monday of each month and at the request of members on 4th April, 2023 the evening meetings to continue until the end of the 2023 Rotary year at least. The idea of the evening meetings is to provide the ability of those members who cannot be at the lunch meeting to catch up with club members for some fellowship.
Our last evening meeting held on 24th April, 2023 with a terrific speaker being Hon Stephen PRATT MLC outlining his involvement in a Parliamentary group promoting research into rare and undiagnosed diseases. We have had some wonderful speakers this year so take the opportunity to be involved.

For the remainder of the 2022-23 Rotary year we have four meetings which are:
8th May ( lunchtime )
22nd May (evening)
12th June ( Lunchtime )
27th June ( changeover – NB Tuesday at Royal Perth Golf Club )
The Changeover Meeting has been booked for Tuesday 27th June, 2023 at the Royal Perth Golf Club at 6.30pm for 7.00pm start. I have sent an email message out to members and have thus far had quite a number of responses but need to know if you are coming to this event or not. If you have not responded as yet please email me at peter.l.smith@hotmail.com to advise of your ability to attend or otherwise. I need correct numbers for catering purposes at this event.
This will be a two course meal with drink on arrival and at a cost of $50/person. Monies for attendance to be payable to the Melville Rotary bank account ( Bsb 066 102 & Acc 1020 9353 with your surname please so we can identify the payment and email to me confirming payment). Let’s make this an outstanding night for our President Elect Phillip.
Another upcoming event is the annual Rotary Art Show at Garden City. James Morris has sent out the roster for this project so please assist where you can. At this stage, I am aware we will have some Rotarians away overseas so please consider doing one or two time slots more than you may have done in previous years to help James out with this fabulous program.
It has been pleasing to see the markets going fairly well and thank you those who have attended early on a Sunday to assist. As expressed at a meeting I recently attended “Some of our best fellowship happens at the markets!” And of course thanks to the Hawaiian Group for providing this facility to us.
With the impending 2023-24 Rotary year approaching it was fabulous to see so many of our club members attending the District Assembly. That all goes well to another successful year with a new President in the new District 9423.
Keep an eye out in the local papers. I m aware that Ross Calnan and David Porter have been in discussion with a story teller who is going to focus on some of our projects to the general public.
For those travelling have a safe journey and wonderful trip and for those returning…nice to see you back.
So finally let me just say that with the recent Anzac Day remembrance, I did reflect on our ability to participate in programs, help our community both locally, nearby or worldwide. The sacrifices of those many servicemen and women provided us the freedom to help others.
