OCTOBER 2024 NEWSLETTER
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Marilyn Barton
It was good to see our club represented in Sydney for the Fit for Purpose weekend by PDG David Barton who was appointed as a Fitness Coach to assist five West Australian and one South Australian clubs. We look forward to hearing more and how this experience that has been gained from that weekend can assist our club as well.

We have inducted three new members, Jennifer Spanbroek, Louise Tomlin and Paula Brenssell. Welcome, and we look forward to getting to know you all better.
It was wonderful to see so many Rotarians and their partners at the annual President’s Cocktail Party on Sunday
20th October, 2024. Despite the wet weather, it was cozy around a warm heater and it was a great time for everyone to meet the new members and also to let the Japanese exchange student, Haruki, who is currently living with Dale Cole, practise his English skills.
The guest speaker at the President’s Cocktail Party was Dave Hodson and he came along with his wife Karen, and trainee Guide Dog, Kerry for us all to meet. Dave was presented with a PHF for all his work with Guide Dogs over the last ten years, and also the fund raising event, abseiling down one of the buildings in Perth last weekend. He will be joined by Rotarian Craig Rothleitner, who also abseiled down with Dave. I would also like to thank Dale for her fantastic support in assisting with the cooking and serving of the food.
On Monday 28th October, 2024, we heard from Sue Burtenshaw and the history of Princess Margaret Hospital. What an excellent talk giving us the need for a children’s hospital and its development from its initial beginnings to its closure. Our next two Monday meetings are the 11th November, with guest speaker Merril Pickering
from Melville City Council, and on the 25th November, with guest speaker Dr Jacinta Vu to tell us about “Healing Smiles”

Certificate of Appreciation
A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Past President Charles Waterton for his wonderful work with organising the Banksia planting and watering in all the heat last summer.

TREE WATERING STARTS
Just a quick note to let you know that fortnightly tree watering will starting again at the Blackwall Reach site at 6.30 am on Saturday 9th November. Assemble at the Blackwall Reach car park, which is at the southern end of the Point Walter golf course. Could you please put an item about this in the next issue of the newsletter? 8 -10 ‘hose holders’ will be required, so please encourage people to turn up for this 2 hour task. Offsetting the early start, the advantages of this work include:
  • Enjoying the serenity and beauty of the bush in the early hours of a spring morning (the best time of the day to be in the bush, surely?);
  • The therapeutic benefits of holding a hose and watering plants;
  • The opportunity to support the revitalisation of a previously degraded area; and
  • After about 2 hours of therapy, the satisfaction of knowing you’ve just done a job that is really worth doing (and the rest of the day is yours!)
Please call me if you have any queries
Cheers Charles
