President's Ponderings

It was a busy latter part of November with the official opening of the Melville Men’s Shed on November 25th where there was a display of the works and machinery of the complex. A large culmination of work by a number of people and particularly Rob Willis is arranging significant funding for this program.
26th November, 2022 saw the official unveiling of the Queens Platinum Jubilee plaque at Blackwall Reach Parade, Bicton.  A tremendous amount of work and preparation into this event by Ian Williams saw a small but enthusiastic group unveil the plaque and then enjoy a magnificent morning tea at the Bicton Baths. Many thanks to all the ladies who prepared the enormous amount of food.

On the 28th November, 2022 we had our indigenous Teacher scholarship awardee Emma Jo Passmore attend at the Rotary Club and speak in relation to her background and the teaching course she is undertaking with the assistance of the Mineral Resources Melville Rotary Indigenous Teaching Scholarship. What a delightful and ambitious young lady who has a great desire to improve the education of all children but with a desire to teach in remote areas and keep the ethos that knowledge is creative.

The 5th December Christmas meeting organised by PP Leigh Smith resulted in a tremendous turnout at Gioira by the River restaurant where the food was outstanding, the views most spectacular and the company exceptional. Additionally, we were treated to a beauty pageant by some beautiful  young ladies who outlined the hours and works they had put in to achieve success at beauty pageants. Congratulations to Ally for the work she had done with these young girls. The Christmas event was attended by in excess of 50 people and the restaurant opened especially for our Rotary Club. Some fun, frivolity and good company made for a wonderful night at what was quite simply a stunning location.

A really interesting evening at the Australian Rotary Health dinner where Laura Porato and I attended on behalf of the Melville Rotary Club. It was fabulous to hear the feedback of the recipients of the scholarships and how they continue to support each other.

Our final meeting for the 2022 Calendar year is at the Annual General Meeting for the Rotary Club where position holders for the 2023-24 Rotary year will be nominated and also for the nominees for President elect position for the 2024-25 Rotary year. This is an important meeting for the club going forward so we do seek your attendance. At the completion of the meeting please spend a little time to celebrate the Christmas break when we adjourn for some light refreshments.

We venture into the New Year with a view to having two meetings a month being the 2nd Monday and the 4th Monday of each month. This is a three month trial period only. Unfortunately, with the inability to have meals provided at our current venue an alternative location needs to be considered.
Finally, may I wish all a joyous Christmas and fabulous New Year and thank you all for the time and effort put in to attending events and contributing to our community.
