The Rotary Club of Melville has surpassed itself this month with the organisation of the Melville Chamber of Commerce event, held at the South of Perth Yacht Club on Wednesday 25th September, 2024. We had ten members from our club attend, who used the opportunity to mingle with people from local businesses, as well as hearing all about the organisation, “Rotary Means Business” from its Chair, Steven Stanbrook. The emphasis of Steven’s talk was about how business connections and fellowship actually underpin Rotary, and from there, service to both the community (locally and internationally) actually grew. I think it is important to remember our beginnings of business connections and fellowship, in conjunction with our wonderful ongoing service commitments. What a way to show our Impact within our community! With many thanks to David Porter, Phillip Draber and James Morrison for organising the event.
We also heard a wonderful and very enlightening talk by one of our newer members,David Jamieson. David’s working and private life was a very full story, and we really appreciated hearing so much about David in the short time we gave him. Thank you David, and its fantastic to have you as part of our club.
On Monday September 30th, we welcomed Dave Richardson and Craig Rothleitner back into the club, after several year’s absence, Dave's absence was due to being relocated to Victoria. Craig was absence because work commitments. Welcome back Dave and Craig.
On a very different note, as president, I attended the Rotary Community Group 1 meeting on Sunday September 8th, 2024, along with the presidents form the eleven other clubs in the group. We discussed various strengths of our clubs, as well as how we could improve. One of the main results for the discussions was that collaboration between clubs would not only increase impact within the community, but also possibly an increase in membership. After much deliberation, two focus areas, Homelessness and Tree Planting were decided, and these to be taken back to clubs to gain their agreement or otherwise. The next meeting to further plan possible projects within these areas is next Wednesday, 2nd October, 2024.
