Rotary Club of Melville

MARCH 2025 NEWSLETTER
President’s Report

The club has been busy once again during March. Our guest speakers have included Rachel Burns (below) from Integrity Initiative. Below is Dianne Wright speaking on the fate of Austrian Nurses serving overseas during WW11.

A breakfast at Tompkins Park was also organised by the Youth Committee on Sunday 16th March, and this was well attended by many of our members and their partners. Many thanks to the Youth committee, and Peter Smith in particular for organising this event. Below Rotarians enjoying their breakifast.

The club has committed to one social event per month, and so I am looking forward to any member or committee who would like to organise the next one.

Great things are happening at the Melville Markets, with the erection of two good sized signs. This is the result of the liaison between Kareena Ballard, Leigh Smith, Hawaiian and the Melville Council.
In addition, Kareena has sourced new lightweight signboards with Corflutes inside them that can be changed regularly advertising what our club is all about, our activities and membership and the various charities that we support.
A huge thank you to these two members for the ongoing work in this area. According to Kareena Ballard, the markets have progressed smoothly this year, and the increase in fees has been well accepted.

Although summer is officially over this weekend, tree watering is still underway every second Saturday morning at Point Walter, and volunteers are still needed to assist in watering the seedlings. Please contact David Hewitt or Murray Meaton for further information.

The Rotary Community Group 1 (RCG 1), of which the Rotary Club of Melville is a member, continues to investigate any possible projects in either the area of Homelessness or Vegetation, in order to find a viable project which as many clubs in the group can participate in, and that meets the four Rotary International’s four key priorities:
  • Impact: Increase our impact by achieving measurable, sustainable, and far-reaching results.
  • Reach: Expand our reach, by connecting with more people and communities.
  • Engagement: Enhance participant engagement through creating meaningful and rewarding experiences for all.
  • Adapt: Increase our ability to adapt by addressing new challenges and opportunities.

There has been District Seminars of the President Elect (now called PELDS), the Foundation Seminar, and upcoming is the District Assembly on Saturday 5th April, 2025, at Willetton Basketball Stadium. This is important for all Board members for 2025-26 to attend.

Our club, in conjunction with the South of Perth Yacht Club is assisting with Cruising Butterflies on Sunday 13th April, 2025. We are hosting the Reception and Tee Shirt distribution desks, and would love as many volunteers from about 8.00am onwards for a couple of hours. Please give your names to Trevor Ridgwell if you are able to make it. We already have some willing volunteers who enjoyed it so much last year, that they are happy to give of their time once again.

The programme of speakers for the Monday meetings in April 2025 are as follows, and we hope to see as many as possible to hear the guest speakers.
  • Monday 14th April, 2025: Connor Nicholas and his experiences sailing at the recent Olympic Games in France.
  • Monday 28th April, 2025: Emma Charlton. Chair: Bottle Top Hill Recycling

From the Editor
The board have requested that each member of the club could give a small description of their working life so the new members have and idea of what the members backgrounds are.  I will be sending out requests before the next newsletter so I can put them in the monthly newsletter.

The up and coming Art Show and Sales is being held on the 8th to 15th June 2025.  Please put these dates in your diary.  This is our 50th anniversary so we are going to make a big song and dance about it.

Margaret River Rotary Conference
David Porter and some of our new members attended the conference last weekend.  A report will be forth coming in the next newsletter, meanwhile I have a photo of a truck project that David Porter participated in. See below.
