Rotary Club of Melville

JULY 2024 NEWSLETTER
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Marilyn Barton
As the new year in Rotary begins, as part of the Regionalisation Pilot programme, Melville Rotary has been allocated to Rotary Community Group 1,  which consists of eleven clubs, including Fremantle, Cockburn, Attadale, Applecross, Booragoon, Como, Mill Point, Victoria Park, Willettonand EWA.

The Presidents have already met and are looking at how all the clubs can work together to increase their impact within the community through combined projects, meetings or other events. At this stage, it is just a getting to know each other club’s interests and ideas, before anything is decided and taken back to the individual clubs for approval.

Within our own club, we have settled into the year with two meetings, one of which was a Club Assembly. The Treasurer, David Porter, proposed the budget, and Committee Chairs spoke about their proposed programmes, with each committee planning some contingency within their individual budgets. After some input and questions from the floor, the Budget was passed, with a review in December, because many of the items that make up committee budgets can be fluid and change over time.

I would like to thank the Chairs of the Committees to come together with the members of their committees in order to be able to put their committee budgets together, especially those who were new to the committee and took a lead role in putting the budget together in the temporary absence of the Chair. Many thanks to the members of the Community committee for taking on this role.

A number of club issues were raised that did not directly affect the budget, and due to time constraints were not able to be fully addressed. However there will be a Club Forum in October to enable further questions and discussion from members about Club issues.

R.I President 24 - 25
Stephanie Urcheck
The theme for this year is “The Magic of Rotary”, and she was very clear that its not about magic wands or fairy dust, it’s about the service that comes from each and every Rotarian, and that service can take different forms, from being involved at a practical level or an organisational level.
To make this Magic happen, there are four major goals for this club for this coming Rotary year, based on the Rotary Action Plan for 2024-25.
  1. Engage: According to Past R.I directr Jessie Harman,  a club needs to be built around its members, and not the members around the club, and so we need  to continue to look at flexibility of engagement and contribution for each individual member, according to their circumstances.
  2. Adapt: We need to embrace and be innovative in how we go about achieving our goals.
  3. Impact: The work done by Rotarians should be known by not only our local community but also the wider community, and strengthen the collaboration with other organisations in our community, such as with our local member of parliament, Melville Council, the South of Perth Yacht Club, the Men’s Shed, Bunnings and more.
  4. Reach: This year also, is the beginning of a pilot programme in Zone 8, with our club now a member of a group with eleven other clubs.
Together we can
"Make Magic Happen"
